Clinical Education at the Huntsman Hospital

mammography

The Mammography clinical education program is offered through the University, department of radiology to registered or registry eligible radiographers. In the past, students have been selected to complete their supervised clinical education at Huntsman Cancer Hospital. These have been students who have just completed a radiography program; however the opportunity is available for any registered female radiographer. The applicants will be required to apply utilizing the admission procedures established for the MRI, CT and Nuclear Medicine program.

In order to be a qualified candidate for the ARRT post-primary certification examination in Mammography, the candidate must complete and document 40 hours of training/education specific to mammography under the supervision of a qualified instructor. The hours of documented training shall include, but not necessarily be limited to:

  1. Training in breast anatomy and physiology, positioning and compression, quality assurance/quality control techniques, imaging of patients with breast implants;
  2. The performance of a minimum of 25 examinations under the direct supervision of ARRT registered technologists or radiologists (12.5 hours maximum);
  3. At least 8 hours of training in each mammography modality to be used by the technologists in performing mammography exams.
  4. The candidate must perform mammographic examinations (screening and/or diagnostic) on an additional 75 patients addressing designated tasks in each examination. These 75 examinations, plus the 25 examinations performed under the direct supervision of an individual qualified (as defined by MQSA) to perform mammography, total 100 required mammographic examinations. All examinations must be performed on patients.
  5. The candidate must participate in the performance, evaluation, and recording of all the QC tests from either the film-screen or the digital column. The film-screen QC tests are described in the Mammography Quality Control Manual (1999) published by the American College of Radiology.
  6. The candidate must observe, assist with, or participate in at least four interventional special examinations such as needle localization, breast MRI, breast ultrasound, stereotactic procedures, implant imaging or ductography.
  7. The candidate must review at least 20 mammographic examinations with a radiologist to evaluate radiographic technique, breast anatomy and pathology.

The University becomes an academic partner with the student in this program. The student locates an academic session that is MQSA approved. These are usually offered in condensed seminars that run no longer than a week. The University will interview, select and place the student at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, where digital mammography is performed. Here, the student can complete all of the other requirements as defined in numbers 2 – 7. The student can also be placed at another University clinical site where mammography is performed utilizing film-screen if the student would like this experience.

The cost of the partnership is $2,000.00.
