On November 3rd, 2006, the Utah Center for Advanced Imaging Research received a $1.8 million grant from the Ben B. and Iris M. Margolis Foundation.
It is the wish of the Margolis Foundation that these funds support the development of techniques to "personalize" medical treatment, by characterizing disease at the level of the individual patient. The intent is to then tailor treatment to those disease characteristics. This approach will find particular application in the treatment of cancer.
Funds will be disbursed over six years and on November 3rd UCAIR received the first installment of $300,000.
UCAIR came to the attention of the Margolis Foundation in April of 2006 at a presentation by UCAIR investigators to Health Sciences Advocates - a group of caring individuals from the Salt Lake City area with an interest in promoting better healthcare by fostering medical research at the University of Utah. Julie Webster, a member of the Margolis Foundation Board was in the audience. After talking with Dennis Parker, Ph.D., the director of UCAIR and John Hoffman, M.D., the Chief of Medical Imaging at the University of Utah, Julie invited an application for funds, which proved successful.
The faculty, staff and students of UCAIR offer their profound thanks to the Board members of the Margolis Foundation, Julie Webster, Marlene Zander, Bob Hatch and Chris Burke, for their interest and patronage.
