RADIOLOGY 7060 COURSE OVERVIEW

Welcome to the Radiology fourth year elective! We are glad to have you in the department and hope that this will be a positive learning experience for everyone. This elective is structured differently than your clinical electives. You will have little patient contact and minimal responsibilities. There is no overnight or weekend call. What you get out of this month will depend on what you put into it. Your senior year is truly a transition between the role of student and responsible physician. You are developing patterns now of taking responsibility for your own training and we are here to assist you.

COURSE INFORMATION

Rotations will be assigned based on your expression of interest and the goal of provided general exposure to the use and practice of radiology. Rotations in pediatric radiology are a minimum of 5 days in length and are at Primary Children’s Medical Center. All other rotations are at the University Hospital. Rotations in OB US are at the Perinatal Diagnostic Center on the 2nd floor. Faculty may be either radiologists or perinatologists. Rotations in ultrasound are in the general ultrasound section on the 1st floor. Changes in the schedule are allowed between students on this rotation provided both students agree to the change. No other changes will be allowed.

Credit for this course is based on (1) Attendance, (2) Completing webased student module; http://webct.utah.edu , (3) Written exam at the end of the course, (4) Evaluations from your individual rotations, and (5) A ten minute presentation. We offer a textbook checkout service so that you will all have a copy of the same general radiology text during the month you are on this rotation. Credit for this course also depends on you returning the book

ATTENDANCE:

Please note you are expected to be in the department from 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. You may be excused earlier at the discretion of your staff of the day. If you need to leave for any reason, please discuss with your staff person that day. Also, if you encounter any emergencies or other problems that require your absence, please also notify Terri Clayson at 581-2868. Please wear your nametag while you are in the Department so you will be identifiable to the faculty and staff.

CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:

7:30 – 8:30 a.m.	Daily	Resident Morning Conference
8:30 – 9:30 a.m.	Daily	Medical Student Lecture
12:00 – 1:00 p.m.	Daily	Resident Conference
1:00 – 2:00 p.m.	Daily	Medical Student Lecture

You will be excused from your clinical rotations to attend these lectures (schedules for specific topics will be distributed on your first day). The M4 student lectures at 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. are designed specifically for students to give you an overview of the multiple areas of Radiology. All conferences are in the Radiology Large Conference Room #1A57 with the exception of Wednesday’s Noon lecture that is at PCMC in the Reading Room in Medical Imaging on the first floor (except on Wednesday, 8/22, conference is in 1A57). Sign-in sheets will be present for you to sign in at all lectures.

WRITTEN EXAM:

The written exam will be a multiple choice exam at the end of the course with 50% of the test being imaging interpretation. You are expected to read this text in its entirety during the month. You don’t have overnight or weekend call so you have more time for study during this month compared to some other senior electives. It will help if you read the pertinent chapters before each rotation. (e.g., read the chest chapter before your rotation on chest!). If you do not have a rotation in an area covered by a lecture, you should read the chapter BEFORE the lecture on the subject (e.g., read the breast imaging chapter before the lecture on mammography).

ORAL PRESENTATION:

A ten to fifteen minute presentation during the fourth week will be done on any topic you wish in Radiology. No slides need to be made but computer presentations are acceptable. Case examples can be borrowed from faculty or teaching files. Handouts are often helpful.
