Cell Therapy Facility

Stem Cell Transplant

The Cell Therapy Facility at the University of Utah provides hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells for multifaceted Utah Blood and Marrow Transplant Programs. The programs include Multiple Myeloma, Adult Leukemia and Lymphoma and Pediatrics. The Myeloma Program at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) continually studies emerging and combination therapies to give patients unprecedented opportunities for treatment. In addition to providing the best possible medical treatment from internationally recognized physicians specializing in myeloma, the Myeloma Program at HCI is dedicated to helping patients and their families cope with the emotional, social, physical, and financial challenges they face. Adult patients with leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia and other blood disorders are treated at the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics and at the Intermountain Blood and Marrow Transplant Program. Pediatric patients are treated at Primary Children's Medical Center.

Our experienced cell therapy technologists collect, process, store and infuse consistent, high-quality stem and progenitor cells (HPC) from bone marrow, growth factor-mobilized peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood. These services are available 365 days per year to support patient needs. The cell therapy collection and processing team is FDA-registered and inspected, and accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT). Current activities include:

  • Collection, Processing and Infusion of Autologous and Allogeneic HPC from bone marrow
  • Collection, Processing and Infusion of Autologous and Allogeneic HPC from apheresis
  • Processing and Infusion of Allogeneic HPC from umbilical cord blood

The Cell Therapy Facility also supports Phase I/II clinical trials using established hematopoietic stem cell collection and processing protocols to treat novel target disease states. In collaboration with the University of Utah Division of Vascular Surgery, Northwestern University and Baxter Healthcare, CTF is activated for patient enrollment to treat critical limb ischemia (CLI), using autologous hematopoietic cells collected by apheresis and enriched for stem cell content.
